Day 5 – The Big Race and Hanging Out

Sunday, April 12th, our last day in Washington DC did not disappoint. Robert, Alex and I met up at 8:00am to get to the starting line of the Cherry Blossom 10 mile run to see if we could spot Courtney among the 15,000 or so runners and as God would have it we did! We saw her about half way through and then again at the finish line. She did amazing! She didn’t even look tired!

Afterwards we went to another local restaurant for some more great food…Belgian waffles, eggs, bacon, and fried potatoes! After all Courtney needed to replenish her calorie intake and it wouldn’t have been right for us not to join her. On the walk back to their apartment we stopped in a couple of open houses and were not impressed with either one.

They volunteered to accompany us to any museum or monument we wanted to see but since Robert and I have both been here before several times we opted to just relax at their apartment and watch The Masters and the Washington Nationals play the Philadelphia Phillies. Later we walked to the grocery store to get stuff to cook for dinner. We went to their roof top where the residents have access to grills and picnic tables and had ourselves a lovely dinner.

Well it was time to say goodbye (she types with a lump in her throat) which is always so hard to do. We love those two dearly and can’t even express how proud we are of them.

One more thing…Morgan found out tonight that she got accepted to Baylor Healthcare Dietetic Internship Program in Dallas starting in August after she graduates in May. Huge answer to prayer!

The rest of our vacation begins tomorrow – heading east to Maryland and then south toward the Outer Banks.

Day 4 – Cherry Blossoms in D.C.

We started out the morning with a hurried “uber” ride to Pier 4 on the Potomac River for our boat tour of the cherry blossom trees. It was a beautiful day, a little breezy, but the sun was shining with a clear blue sky. The hour long tour was quite enjoyable and it seems like the trees are at several different stages of the blooming process – all of which are spectacular!

After the boat tour Alex and Courtney took us to The Partisan for a delicious brunch. We are really eating well on this trip! Thankfully we are also doing a lot of walking so maybe it all evens out. We all decided we wanted to experience the craziness of the cherry blossom festival where the crowds were ridiculous! It was fun.

Our next stop was Union Market – which is a farmers’ market type place with various vendors selling their delicious concoctions. Courtney and I had ice cream cones, Alex and Robert shared a bourbon, butter, bread pudding with apple chunks and salted caramel sauce. WOW!!!

We went back to their apartment for a little R & R and then decided at the last minute to go to their Saturday evening church service because we didn’t think we could make it tomorrow morning after Courtney’s 10 mile race. Yes that’s right she is going to run 10 miles tomorrow morning! Go Courtney!

It’s always such a blessing to see where your kids worship and know that they are making this place their home….of course you always wish they were closer but so happy for the them where they are.

Alex and Courtney did a great job of planning ahead for our activities. They made dinner reservations both nights and had things planned for us to do. Dinner was at an Italian restaurant close to Alex’s office so we got to tour his office before dinner…another extremely proud moment. Also the restaurant is the one Alex’s employers took him when they made him the offer for his job. Everything was delicious!

Sorry this is a bit verbose but there was a lot to cover today. Good night.
